What's stopping CIO's from going to open source?

Published: 8:06 AM GMT, Monday, 16 June 2008

The CIO site published their results of a survey of business and management level people regarding their use of open source projects. The top reasons they went to open source was:

Lower total cost of ownership (59 percent) and acquisition costs (56 percent) lead the pack. Greater flexibility was cited as a primary reason by 32 percent of respondents, and access to source code is a motivation for one in three

So if that is why people are moving or looking at open source, what of the flip side? What are their concerns?

45% of people surveyed noted they were concerned regarding support and would happen if they needed help. Second on their list of concerns was awareness and knowledge, or in other words, what was their barrier to entry, how quickly could they come up to speed with the project.

This is all good news for us as it assures us we are on the right path in attempting to make the ease of installation for OpenBD as painless and as easy as possible. We want people to be up and running in as quick a time as possible.
